Balsam, lush prune and all sorts of earthy, interesting aromas set this rich, ripe Carmenère off on a wild ride. Chocolate greets you at the front door, with deep plum and berry waiting behind. It’s saturated and superripe but it doesn’t lose step or steam. Excellent in the ultraripe, modern style.

Spicy and woody to begin with, but time unveils strawberry jam aromas. There’s not a ton of definition to the palate, but it’s reasonably fruity and smooth, with ample vanilla flavors to the creamy finish. If you prefer a broad, softer Merlot with some buttery oak, this is for you.

Getting a wine from 2004 seems behind the times, but this one shows much younger than its age. The nose deals lemon peel, shoe polish and dark berry aromas. Chewable tannins give the palate heft and depth, while the flavors are of sweet blackberry, chocolate and licorice. Turns oakier and less fruity as it opens up, indicating that it’s now or never for this Carignan.

A little bit funky, especially at first, but if you give it time the early Syrah-based animal and sweat aromas give way to purer black fruit, bramble and plenty of oak-driven warmth. It has its merits such as color and mouthfeel, but all in all it doesn’t quite get it rolling in exactly the right direction.

Comes at you with a positive mix of herbal aromas and red fruit. The palate is spicy and savory, with crisp but simple fruit flavors forming a nice foundation. Shows good weight and flow, as it ultimately registers as fresh.

Here’s a nice and dark Cab with black licorice, clove, pepper and blackberry aromas. The palate is ripe and sweet, with roundness and serious depth. Finishes with chocolate and mint as well as some lushness.

Odfjell previously struggled a bit with SB but this one is quite good and correct. It features green aromas of lime and herbs with some minerality folded in. The palate is zesty and lively, with lime and green apple flavors. Finishes in direct fashion. Drink soon.

Light berry, cheese and spice aromas are just clean enough; the palate is solid and well built for an $8 Cab, with chunky, candied, herbal flavors of plum and berry. Finishes dry and mostly clean. Delivers what you expect and probably a little more.

More herbal and plodding than prior vintages, with slightly pickled, briney flavors of blackberry, plum, olive and cough drop. Good in the mouth, with proper size and balance. Finishes a little green and peppery, but that’s Carmenère, folks, like it or leave it.

Hard and rubbery, with burnt coffee and mineral aromas. Very hard and tannic, with a borderline weedy, herbal note to the finish. Has its merits, but the feel is too hard and the love has gone on hiatus. Imported by Select Fine Wine.
