Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A soft, round wine that almost seems designed for glugging. Dusty earth and dried grass aromas give way to a sweet, alcoholic attack filled with red berries and cherries. The warm, spirity finish leaves you glowing and reaching for another sip. —J.C.

Nicely balanced McLaren Vale Shiraz, featuring mixed berries, toast and spice carried by a firm structure and some rich, soft tannins on the finish. Aromas of coffee, plum and graham crackers complete the package. Drink now–2020.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A satisfying steak house red, Oliverhill’s 2008 Red Silk doesn’t have the intensity or complexity of the Jimmy Section or Mount Benson Shirazes, but still offers plums and vanilla, plenty of weight and richness and a delicate dustiness on the finish. Drink now-2016.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is one of the early stars of South Australia’s highly variable 2008 vintage. Herbal, smoky and vaguely peppery upfront, this is full bodied and creamy in texture without being soft, boasting intense raspberry and blueberry fruit framed by cedar and smoke. Finishes with surprising firmness and structure, but it should round into form by the end of 2010 and last through at least 2020.

Features some superb elements that come off as a bit disjointed—perhaps it just needs some time? High-toned cherry fruit picks up some herbal notes and peppery cinnamon flavors, then finishes crisp, with hints of orange pekoe tea.

A well-made Petite Sirah with jammy fruit and some tannic structure, this wine could develop nicely over the next 5–6 years. Right now, the fruit is somewhat simple, but the acids and tannins seem to have the balance to age, and the fruit is concentrated enough to go at least that far.

Oliverhill seems to have hit the mark in 2008 with their Jimmy Section Shiraz, a seamless blend of blueberries and cream dressed up with savory notes of dark earth and dark coffee. Full-bodied and creamy textured, this densely concentrated wine should be at its best now-2020.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is one sexy, concentrated wine. Aromas are rich and perfumed, featuring purple fruit and black pepper at the fore. It's still fairly tannic and young, but in a few years' time the purple fruit and wheat flour flavors will be showing beautlfully.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A complex bouquet of dark plummy fruit, bacon, wheat, leather and eucalyptus opens this uniformly well-liked offering. It’s full and even, with fine fruit-to- acid balance on the palate, good texture and weight, and roasted fruit, licorice, earth and mint flavors. More than one panelist described this seamless, smooth wine as sexy. It’s a lovely, seductive example with a long, evenly tannic blackberry, cocoa and caramel-tinged finish.

The 2006 Jimmy Section is made in a rich, syrupy style, but does it have enough structure to improve with age? The dense blackberry and blueberry fruit carries its 15.5% alcohol well—at least for the moment—and there are some attractive peppery, herbal complexities that make for intersting drinking right now, so why wait?
