Slightly baked and raisiny, with aromas of black currants and blackberry jam. The palate pushes some zest and kick, while the raspberry and plum flavors are best initially and then break up before a simple finish. Offers a good midlevel taste of Priorato. Imported by Fine Estates From Spain.

Dark cherry, raspberry, mineral and black pepper aromas start this value-driven Priorat on its way. The palate features high-toned, borderline tart black cherry and plum flavors, while the finish shows a bit of resiny oak that translates into spice and vanilla. A reasonable wine; juicy but not very rich.

The sweet, rubbery nose deals earth, herbs, smoked meat and richness, while the palate is candied and big, with sweet, medicinal flavors of blackberry and black cherry. A touch lactic on the finish, but otherwise the wine is alert and ready to drink.

Catalonia, in Spain’s northeast, is a home to many grapes also grown in France’s Rhône Valley. Which home is the home is a dispute to avoid here, but don’t avoid this tasty, affordable 50-50 Garnacha-Cariñena (or en Français, Grenache-Carignane) blend. The complex aromas of dark fruit, rosemary, lavender, smoke and leather are impressive. The sweet-tart fruit, offset by game, licorice and oak accents, rides a tangy mouthfeel, and the dry finish displays a hint of gunpowder. It’s juicy, but not simple; in fact, the wine’s gamy notes may be too much for some. Still, this offers real character in a price range where far too many wines lack any identity. Drink now–2006+. Best Buy. —M.M.

This is a higher-end blend from Onix, and it offers an earthy, almost compost-like opening with leafy notes of tobacco, coffee grinds, leather and hard cheese. The palate is solidly built, with cheek-blasting berry and coffee flavors. Toasty on the back end, with bitter chocolate. Very big but lacks some precision and purity of aromas and flavors. Drink now through 2012.
