Like with the Oops Carmenère/Merlot blend, this varietal bottling tells the story of how Carmenère was discovered in Chile. The wine, however, doesn’t offer a whole lot. It’s hard, rubbery and lightly baked, with grabby tannins supporting midland berry flavors.

A bit wanting as Cabernet goes, with cherry and tea aromas. The palate is richer than the nose, offering big, ripe fruit that’s generic in style but generally clean and pleasant. Mild chocolate and brown sugar notes on the finish ensure its friendliness. Imported by Schwartz-Olcott Importers.

The oops concept is to blend Carmenère, the so-called lost variety, into everything, including Sauvignon Blanc. And while you don’t really taste the red in this, you do get bell pepper, melon and citrus. A little watery and dilute in the long run. Imported by Schwartz-Olcott Importers.

The color is more orange than salmon, and the aromas don’t amount to much. In the mouth, there’s sweet, candied orange flavors backed by a creamy, sort of artificial tasting finish. The balance seems okay now but there’s no indication that the wine will hold for long. Imported by Schwartz-Olcott Importers.

The good side of this concept wine is that it tells the story of Carmenère, the so-called lost Bordeaux variety. Unfortunately, not as much attention was paid to the wine itself, which includes 30% Merlot and tastes mildly of raspberry and herbs but also shows a hard, grating mouthfeel. .

Up until now we haven’t been real fond of the Oops brand from Chile. However, this Sauvignon Blanc is exactly what we like. It starts with a basic but comfortable blend of citrusy aromas before showing a complete palate consisting of apple, grapefruit, celery and white pepper flavors. A totally solid wine with no gaps. Level and delicious, with proper bite and scour.

A reedy and odd-smelling wine. No matter how many times you come back to it, there’s the scent of latex and a strange perfume to the nose. In the mouth, it’s tannic and blocky, with saturated black cherry and a funky, unfamiliar twist. And it finishes with rubber, plastic, cotton candy and coconut notes. Can’t say this does much to push Carmenère’s status.

This wine varies in quality and perception based on when in its lifespan you taste it. Now, toward the end of the line, it’s tropical and hanging in there, with green apple, citrus and other typical SB aromas and flavors. Even with 15% Carmenère in the blend for kicks, it’s standard and workmanlike.

Chunky, rubbery and leathery on the nose, but there’s plenty of berry fruit, too. For an $11 wine, the palate is lush and plump, with big tannins and full flavors of roasted cherry, plum, herbs and tomato. Finishes long and persistent, but fresh. Interesting and nicely done for Chilean Cab Franc.

Made for Oops by VIA Wines, this oddball Chardonnay features 14% white Carmenère, meaning there’s red fruit (without the skins) added to the blend to give bulk and texture. The result is a slightly waxy, sticky white with peach pit aromas followed by basic apple and citrus flavors. You don’t taste any red fruit, but you do know that it’s not 100% varietal Chardonnay. Drink now.
