The expansive nose features stewed fruit and tomatoes, along with a healthy dose of cedar. Turns stranger in the mouth, picking up tomato-leaf elements. For the adventurous.

More than half the fruit is from San Diego, where Orfila is based. Full, earthy aromas and palate qualities set the stage for a long, woody finish. It’s on the heavy-chunky side of the fence, and thus scores few points for elegance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A heavy overlay of toasty French oak largely masks some tart cherry and cranberry fruit. A fruit-and-oak-bomb style that just doesn’t quite sing when executed with Pinot Noir.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a little-known but cool appellation in San Diego County, a pretty good Syrah that has its work cut out for it. Approaches the quality of more northerly regions with pretty blackberry and pepper flavors and smooth tannins, but can’t overcome its rustic edge.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There are some cherry-berry and pepper flavors here, but the wine is too soft, and drinks fruity and simple. There are also some overripe, pruny tastes, leading to a hot finish. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A dense, dark wine, with dark stone-fruit flavors. It feels thick and gluey in the mouth, probably because of excessively soft acidity. There are also some rugged tannins. This is an awkward, country-style wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Rhône blend is ripe to the point of off-dry, with flamboyant flavors of ripe white peaches, lime pie, vanilla custard and smoke. With a creamy texture, it has a long aftertaste.

You’d expect a smaller appellation than “California” given the words on the label. Too sweet.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Yes, the vintage is correct. Who else is releasing a 2001 Pinot in 2006? Yet it’s a good wine, dry, clean and silky, with cherry pie, cola, rosehip tea and spice flavors. That Edna Valley acidity has preserved it well.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Black cherry fruit stars in this dry, rustic wine. It has strong acids and dusty, astringent tannins, making it worthy of cheese, oil, sausage, tomatoes, that kind of fare.
