Although this 100% Sangiovese doesn’t offer huge intensity or complexity, it does deliver aromas of black cherry, Spanish cedar and exotic spice. The nose is a bit unfocused but the mouthfeel is simple and genuine with nice spice flavors.

Opens with overripe notes of strawberry, cooked cherry and blackberry preserves. Because the wine is from the 2004 vintage, there are also some tertiary aromas of spice, cola and tar.

Dilute and leafy, with slightly stewed red-fruit flavors. Finishes with some toast and smoke, but not much body. Seems more lifeless than it should be; almost Old World in style. Imported by Oriel Wines.

Hefty and aggressive, with an initial volatile blast that gives way to more traditional barnyardy notes. Shows big but hard plum and blackberry flavors on a tannic palate, while the finish is heavy, earthy and ultimately a touch clumsy. Imported by Oriel Wines.

This five-grape blend hails from outside Barcelona. It’s mute on the nose, with hints of horseradish and vinaigrette. Seems pickled on the palate, with rubbery tannins and flavor notes of salsa and wasabi. Imported by Oriel Wines.

Gets out of the blocks with black cherry, cinnamon and forest-like aromas. Structured on the palate, with large tannins protecting cherry and spice flavors. Finishes with a lot of wood spice, chocolate and warmth. Is it too tannic and oaky? Time will tell. Imported by Oriel Wines.

Made at the Sauternes classed growth Château Guiraud, this is part of a worldwide range of wines under the Oriel brand. As it matures, its marmalade flavors are mellowing, giving a rich nut and honey wine, with bursts of acidity and the potential for another few years’ aging.

Starts with fruit cocktail aromas, which are backed by semisweet orange and lemon flavors. Zesty and clean, with pretty good mouthfeel but not much depth of flavor, complexity or nuance. A good wine on its best day.

Here’s a nicely evolved Brunello with earthy tones that are often associated with the Sangiovese Grosso grape. You’ll get dried berry, blackberry, exotic spice and a playful touch of bacon fat that adds dimension and depth. The wine is thick and hearty on the palate, so try a pairing with lamb or game meat.
