Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Great price from a winery that’s consistently been producing top Zins. This one’s actually blended with 11% Petite Sirah. The wine is rich and lusty, with spicy flavors of ripe summer berries, mocha and roasted hazelnuts.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A good followup to the 2004, Ottimino’s 2005 is exuberantly rich and forward in jammy wild blackberry and cherry flavors, with an array of spicy pepper, clove and anise. Entirely dry, it’s wrapped into ripe, firm tannins. Now through 2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big, powerful Zinfandel. It’s very strong in blackberry, blueberry, cocoa and peppery spice flavors, and also very tannic and dry. A dramatic wine, it will do well with barbecue and heavily spiced beef dishes. Should develop bottle age through 2013 or so.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
When Russian River Zinfandel succeeds, and this one does, it marries the variety’s wild, feral personality to the valley’s perfect terroir to produce distinctive wines. Ottimino’s 2005 Von Weidlich is very tannic, but classic in presentation, showing blackberry, currant and intense black pepper aromas and flavors. Might tempt you to cellar it, but it’s best over the next year for sheer exuberance.

Bring on the cheeseburgers! This is an outrageously delicious, easy-drinking Zin that will fall in love with charbroiled beef and melted cheese. It’s not a terribly complicated wine, but perfect for immediate enjoyment with comfort foods.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bright and spicy, yet dense and rich, the wine serves up its plum, blackberry, cassis, toast, vanilla and herb flavors framed in an unusual camphor edge. Fairly bright on the finish, with a long, zippy end.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A wildly flavored, tannic and exuberant Zinfandel that showcases the variety’s exotic personality. Dry and full-bodied, it has brambly flavors of blackberries, black currants, licorice, mocha and smoky cedar, liberally sprinkled with dusty Asian spices. Drink now–2013.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the driest, most elegant and balanced of Ottomino’s new single-vineyard Zinfandels. It has a Cabernet-like structure, although the wild blackberry, mulberry, plum and exotic spice flavors are all Zin, as are the dense, sandpapery tannins. Good now with upscale rich beef and cheese dishes, and should develop gradually in the bottle for many years.

A classic Dry Creek Zinfandel, dry, medium-bodied and spicy, with wild berry fruit and that inimitable briary note to the mouthfeel. Really pleasant, with rich, ripe berry, licorice and cedar flavors. Ideal with barbecue.
