Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pacific Rim is a Riesling specialist, but makes a limited amount of Chenin Blanc; clearly a labor of love. Rare attention is given to this sadly degraded tasting room grape; here it has a chance to express more of its thrilling complexity. Bone dry and loaded with lemon, grapefruit and melon fruit, this adds floral hints and sweet hay in the nose, while balancing its young, leesy flavors with bright acids.

Full-bodied, it leans into stone fruits and light tropical. Tasted a few weeks before its official release, it remained a little sugary, with its relatively high alcohol (and lower acidity) adding to the impression of sweetness.

Well-integrated flavors of mixed fruits are augmented with a sneaky streak of caramel, and a slight buttery softness in the finish. Very appealing, with a good long finish.

This is made by fermenting raspberries to about .5% alcohol, then adding grape spirits to produce a hybrid between liqueur and wine. Intensely fragrant, with 16.5% alcohol and 16% residual sugar. The raspberry flavors are concentrated and pure, with amazing persistence. Use this in cocktails, or mix it with bubbly.

This vineyard has been Demeter certified biodynamic, one of just a handful in Washington to achieve that recognition. It’s all natural, ripe and full-flavored, with a wonderful, mouthfilling intensity. The flavors are a lovely mix of stone, yeast, flower and a jumble of citrus and apple fruits.

The wine is finished at 1.2% residual sugar, but tastes bone dry. It’s succulent and juicy, with floral aromas, stone fruits and hints of honeysuckle. Concentrated and dense, it is both bracing and long. The bottle was re-tasted on the second and third days after being opened and retained its crispness and vitality beautifully.

From the biodynamic Wallula Vineyard comes this dry, leesy, chewy Riesling, packed with lime and citrus flavors. The fruit was hand-picked and biodynamically grown, though not biodynamically vinified (there is a biodynamic version from the same vineyard). Tart and juicy, the wine brings a mouthful of peach and stone fruits, with marvelous minerality and texture.

Tart, chewy, tangy, mixing apple, lemon, grapefruit and pear—lots of fruit with pear skin phenolics. It’s dry, but not stripped, full and fleshy, with the low sulfur giving it less sharpness and a broader middle.

A burst of lychee and pear, aromatic, perfumed with rose petals, lush and forward. The alcohol is 12%, the residual sugar is 1.7%; with plenty of acid under it. The mix of flower and fruit is perfect, substantial, and beautifully balanced.

Pleasant, definitely sweet, but carried by ripe fruit and moderate acids. Some streaks of honey enliven the midpalate and continue on through the clean and sappy finish. Just a hint of diesel suggests some flavors yet to emerge. This is a very solid, well-crafted effort.
