Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Displays smoky, grilled-meat aromas, along with vanilla and cedar. More meatiness shows up on the palate, joined by black cherries. Finishes soft and delicate; ready to drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A super-classy wine with intensity to spare. The nose and palate are both high-toned and piercing, and red fruit aromas and flavors are supreme. Along with the currant and raspberry character, there’s mild medicinal flavors, cherry cough drop and lots of length and power. Impressive for sure. Drink 2012–2020.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fairly ripe and deep smelling, yet it’s more racy and lean in the mouth. There’s good berry fruit to this Tempranillo-led wine, but it turns kind of sharp and sheering on the back palate. Freshness and snappy zest are the wine’s main characteristics. Probably best with tapas.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This high-priced 2003 parcel-based Tempranillo hits with funky citrus peel and wet clay aromas, which are followed by cherry and savory, almost stewy berry flavors. The heat of 2003 is evidenced on the soft, hollow finish. It’s a very good wine with character and typicity—but for $225?

A mile deep on the nose. The palate starts out grapy and jammy and then develops to show herb-infused plum and berry flavors. The finish of chocolate and black truffle ensures that this is a top-level wine. Drink now through 2014.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Everyone who follows Spain and the Mediterranean basin knows that 2002 was a cool, miserly year. But still, this wine is offering almost nothing. It’s tart, limited and borderline sour. There isn’t much middle or body to it, so expect scratchy red fruit and lots of wayward acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The dark purple color combined with deep, smoky bacon and plum aromas make this enticing from the start. The palate follows the lead laid out by the nose, as it offers mostly rich plum fruit and toasty supporting oak. This is friendly, chewy and big—but not so big as to require extensive aging.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells like a dog badly in need of a bath, and alongside those funky aromas there’s berry fruit and bubblegum. The palate is forceful and sort of heavy and tannic, with herbal, semitart plum flavors. Bright and lively, but unsophisticated, with poor aromas.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Ripe fruit on the nose is accented by graham cracker sweetness and wild herbs. The palate is a little aggressive, but nice. And the flavors of plum, berry and cassis are solid and touched up by an herbal brushing. Composed but a touch acidic and edgy.

Aromas of dried cheese, leather, dust and creamy oak are not as clean as in previous years, and the palate is brillo-pad scratchy with driving cherry and berry flavors. More tart and sharp than ideal, with mild heat and bitterness. May round into better form with time, but as of now it isn’t up to the price.
