Raisiny, sweet and baked, with plenty of oak coming on as it airs out. This vintage is somewhat syrupy and strained compared to prior years, with baked black fruit flavors. Seems a little reduced on the finish, but overall it’s still good given this winery’s strong track record and how the wine compares to other 2007 Riojas.

The gold standard among Viura-based wines from Rioja has to be Placét from Palacios Remondo. Oak plays a big role here, and the nose wows with spice and cinnamon apple. There’s more ripe apple and spice in the mouth, along with excellent acidity and textural creaminess. A stately wine to drink with fish, veal and poultry.

Exotic, reflective strawberry and tea notes open this lighter-bodied, not-so- serious Rioja. Next in line is a mouthfilling blend of blackberry and cassis, but with ample acidity so that it avoids any weighty pitfalls. Finishes soft, with a swath of oaky vanilla flavor. Drink this 50/50 blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha now and over the next 18 months.

Dark and spicy, with rubber and baked-fruit aromas giving way to herbs, clove and other alluring spice scents. As might be expected from a wine bearing Alvaro Palacios’ signature and approval, the final product is smart and snappy, with blackberry, herbs and barrel char all making themselves noticed. Good now and for the next several years.

Light raspberry and plum aromas feature a side note of citrus peel, while the flavors are pure but rudimentary dark berry, plum and herb. Good body and structure, but not complex or layered. Finishes peppery and a touch bitter, with short-lasting fruit.

Opens with rich aromas of raisin, licorice, black plum and molasses that put it on the cusp of overripe. The palate is rich and gritty, with deep berry and molasses flavors. Generous for sure, but also slightly baked and sweet. Tastes like a warm-climate, warm-vintage wine. Drink now.

A clear step up from the overdone 2003 Propiedad, this vintage is sweet and easy to like. There’s a blast of hickory smoke on the new-oak nose, but also black fruit and molasses. The ripe palate deals chewy fruit, medium tannins and moderate length. It’s a charming but blunt wine, and all in all it’s probably not one to hold for too long. Drink now through 2009.

Alvaro Palacios is indeed a great winemaker, as is evidenced by this blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Aromas of bright cherry signify power and structure, yet it’s easy as sin to drink. Shows model integration, bursting berry flavors and ripe tannins. Tasted several times during the past year but not rated until now; this wine just keeps getting better.

More earthy, ripe and bulky than normal, with a lot of smoky/savory aromas. The cherry and apple-skin palate is propelled initially by acidity, and then core depth comes up. For a hot vintage, this wine is expectedly melting and warm. But it still has enough gusto and acid to keep it moving. Drink now through 2008 (with food) and you'll be happy.

Good Rioja from a challenging vintage; the nose deals cherry and a dusting of spices, before turning sharper and leaner with air. Like in previous years, the wine veers toward elegance as it shows red fruit and tea flavors before a grabby, firm finish. Not the best Propiedad but once again, the year was problematic.
