This wine takes a modern approach to Brunello that is instantly recognized by its penetrating aromas of smoke and toasted oak that will surely relax with a few more years of cellar aging. Chewy tannins, fresh berry flavors and good length characterize the oak-driven mouthfeel.

Here’s a smoky, dense expression of Sangiovese (with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) that opens with decisive notes of mature cherry, mineral, charcoal and campfire. There are smooth tannins here and a touch of bitter freshness on the close.

This Riserva Brunello from the hot 2003 vintage delivers a very elegant approach that is not jammy or cooked. In fact, the integrity of the fruit fares surprising well and the wine boasts intense aromas of blackberry, spice, cedar and cola. Playful oak aromas and fruity sweetness bring up the rear.

Palazzo ushers forth a dark, brooding Brunello with thick aromas of cured meat, wet earth, plums and prunes. The wine seems to be at its drinking peak right now and would make a perfect companion to roasted meat.

This is a proud, modern Brunello Riserva that delivers strong and decisive oak tones including vanilla bean, toasted espresso, chocolate fudge and sweet spice that cast a shadow over the natural fruit flavors. The wine is balanced and has good harmony in the mouth, although those wood tones are very present here too. Lovers of traditional Brunello will not appreciate its big, oak-driven character.

Fairly heavy on the nose, with a whiff of wet pooch and damp earth. Somewhat stewy on the nose, while the palate features fat plum flavors and oversized tannins. Not quite up to snuff. Imported by Bedford International.

Light in color but heavy in oak, Alcineo is a modern Tuscan red that puts big emphasis on wood-driven aromas of spice and vanilla. There are some bright cherry and citrus flavors on the finish.
