There’s a touch of volatility to the nose, which explains the aromas of vinaigrette and leather. And there’s even some green to the wine; but give it time in the glass and it evolves into a worthy, simple specimen with adequate blackberry and vanilla flavors. Stocky and decently structured, with 7% Cabernet Sauvignon bolstering 93% Garnacha.

Chunky and broad, with canned-fruit aromas and flavors. The apple and melon flavors are big but bland, so this wine ultimately lacks Verdejo’s desired zest and instead settles for sheer size.

With a hint of prune to the nose and some cheesy oak, the red flags go up. But in the mouth, the wine shows good berry and cassis flavors and admirable depth and length. Finishing notes of cassis and blackberry give it a good send-off. By no means exceptional but by all means a likable though slightly generic Cabernet.

Berry and earth on the nose are welcoming aromas, and overall this juicy, simple Malbec offers clean lines, a touch of complexity and good balance. The flavors channel berry and plum, and some vanilla runs shotgun. Not overripe or off base.

A heavy, nutty Chard. Mealy citrus and peach flavors carry the palate to a flat, uninspiring finish. Ripe but not well balanced.

The new Malbecs keep pouring in from Argentina, among them this heavy, damp example that’s unfocused and raisiny. Very much at the base level of what is acceptable.
