Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is from the cool Sonoma Coast, but 2004 was a blistering vintage and the heat struck at harvest. The result is that this Pinot has a cooked berry taste, like cherry pie-filling that leaked from the crust in the oven and partly caramelized. Still, the wine is dry, silky and elegant.

Classic California Zin, with cherry, blackberry and loganberry flavors and that briary, brambly edge of freshly picked wild fruit. You’ll also find loads of spices and fresh green thyme and sage. Finishes with a slight sweetness, although it’s basically a dry wine, with some elegance and finesse.

Zin doesn’t get bigger or riper than this. Floods the mouth with flamboyant blackberries, cherries, currants, cola, black pepper, anise and sandalwood. It’s tannic and dry, but so fruity it’s almost sweet. High alcohol aids in the impression of sweetness. Oaky, too, in the way of a Cabernet. Delicious and classic Dry Creek.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a silky, crisp quality that makes this wine vibrant. It carries flavors of raspberries and red cherries dusted with brown sugar and smoky oak, and reveals cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices on the finish. There’s a definite sweetness throughout, which chefs will note.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The most important things about this wine are its upfront oak and full-bodied character. The former brings vanilla, toast and sweet oak shadings to the black cherry and cola fruit. It’s soft in acids, which may explain a certain heaviness, but it sure is tasty.

Shares the same characteristics of the winery’s other 2003 Pinots, namely an apparent sweetness that’s inappropriate in a dry table wine. There’s probably no measurable sugar, but the palate impression is of sweetened cherries.

An interesting wine to dissect. It’s very tannic, rather hot in alcohol, and super-spicy, with ripe to ultraripe flavors of wild blackberries, raspberries and currants. Feels a bit rustic and uncoordinated now, but could gain smoothness in a year or two. Certainly it’s a very good example of Dry Creek Zin.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s good acidity in this wine, with fruit that seems too extracted and sweet, like a baked, granulated sugar-infused cherry pie. If you’re a fruit freak, this will do it for you.

Superripe in fruit, this Pinot flatters with cherry pie flavors, with the baked crust and sugary syrup. It has wonderful acidity, but whatever happened to dry, balanced elegance?

The winery’s basic appellation wine is full-bodied and heavy, showing very ripe berry, cherry and mocha flavors. It’s almost like Syrah in weight, except for the silky, fine tannins.
