Despite early woody aromas of sawdust and pencil shavings, this is yet another in a long line of fine Malbecs from Pascual Toso. The black-fruit nose equals pure power (and oak), while the palate is a potent brew of lusty blackberry, mocha and fine acidity. Long and lasting on the finish. A fine example of Mendoza Malbec.

Piercing aromas of bulky fruit and horseradish are tough to handle, and underneath there’s little to no redeeming sweetness. Menacing in its tannic profile.

This is the first Torrontés from Pascual Toso that we’ve rated, and if it’s any indication of what’s going on there, then we say stick to the reds. This is a borderline dud, with chunky, hollow flavors and a mealy finish. Not a total mess but not a good, vivacious Argentine Torrontes by any stretch.

Extremely ripe and concentrated but arguably a bit too massive for its own good. That said, we love the wine’s tobacco, cassis and inky qualities, but worry a little about the lemony oak character and overall potency. Deep as midnight in terms of flavors, with black fruits galore setting up a richly packed, ultraripe finish. New World to the max but very tasty and rich.

Quite the melony wine. It’s heavy on the nose and chunky in the mouth. The flavors of cantaloupe and honeydew are weighty, and while it’s seemingly portly, there isn’t much core to it either.

Having tasted the previous vintages and not liking them all that much, I can safely say that this 2010 is a much better, cleaner, more varietally correct version of Torrontés. It's clean, fresh and defined by light aromas and flavors of lime and green melon. Juicy and soda-like on the finish.

Simple, well made and tropical, with a touch of oak. The palate is zesty, citric and healthy, with pineapple and orange flavors along with a pinch of star anise, vanillin and pith. Finishes fresh and juicy, with mild vanilla shadings.

Initial aromas of clove and cinnamon suggest a lot of barrel action, but give it a few minutes and the wine settles on ripe black fruit, dark spice notes and richness. It’s big-boned but not overly tannic, and it exhibits Shiraz’s bacon and espresso character in a good way.

A year or two ago when Paul Hobbs began consulting for Toso things changed for the better. This is the rare Best Buy that can swim with the big fish and give them a run for the money. Pop the cork and enjoy lusty dark aromas of Turkish tobacco and berry compote. In the mouth, there’s a riot of fruit flavors to ponder followed by a smooth, lusty finish.

A bit stemmy and brambly, so right from the first sniff you know that it's not a lush, berry filled Cab. And the palate confirms the nose, offering baked fruit with green, herbal overtones. Finishes with a blast of coconut and mint courtesy of whatever barrels it rested in.
