Here’s a jammy, overtly ripe expression of Aglianico that ultimately proves to be an easier and more immediate expression of this naturally tannic grape variety. Aromas include candied fruit, blackberry preserves, raw cherry and raisin.

Rotondo is a gorgeous wine that boasts intensity, integration and complexity. The long list of aromatic attributes includes black currant, candied fruit, bitter chocolate, soft vanilla and smokey campfire. Rock-solid tannins are characteristic of Aglianico so let this wine age five years or more in your cellar.

May well be Basilicata’s best wine with flinty, graphite notes derived from volcanic soils and loads of dried prunes, cassis, intense blackberry, leather and toast. The aromas go on and on and constantly evolve in your glass. Aged in barrique and Slovenian casks, the mouthfeel is solid yet smooth, powerful yet elegant. Imported by Vignaioli.

Synthesi is an Aglianico del Vulture that adopts a traditional style. It has sharp, raw tones of blackberry, cherry and spice and polished tannins that are followed by bright crispness and a polished feel. Minerals and ash come through nicely and link the wine to its territory.

Rotondo means round and this wine is squarely intent on delivering soft, round and velvety tones of black cherry, vanilla, spice and other oak-related aromas. This black and inky Aglianico del Vulture is aged in French barrique for 14 months, lending a modern twist to Basilicata’s most traditional wine.

Don Anselmo is among Basilicata’s most important wines because it does a phenomenal job of highlighting the potential of this volcanic territory and the Aglianico grape. This interpretation focuses on soft, velvety tones of black cherry, graphite and spice that peel off in layers. The wine has a dark, concentrated color followed by great intensity, power and rock-hard tannins that need a few more years of bottle aging.

Okay, so there isn’t much fruit to this wine’s aromas, which instead focus on smoke, dried oregano and leather, but don’t let that deter you from trying this spicy, complex wine. Bright cherry fruit underpins pipe tobacco and cinnamon flavors on the palate, and the wine finishes with dusty tannins.

Celebrating 20 years of winemaking tradition, Don Anselmo is a landmark wine that shows the best of the promising, but always overlooked, territory of Basilicata in southern Italy. Redolent of strong sunshine and volcanic soils, the wine is powerful and ripe with dark fruit, spice and mineral aromas. It boasts firm, drying tannins that will age gracefully with more time in the cellar.
