Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The demand for Merlot grapes has left slim pickings for the value brands like Paul Thomas. Earthy, stemmy and showing bare hints of red fruits, this is a hard, tart red wine giving little of the pleasure of Merlot.

Bone-dry, hard and crisp, this is a basic, stainless-steel fermented, nonmalolactic style of Chardonnay. Brisk and competent, but neutral.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Now part of the Canandaigua Wine portfolio, Paul Thomas offers inexpensive varietals and blends such as this, a smoky, earthy take on Washington reds. The fruit shows some strawberry preserve flavors, along with might be called iron or mineral, or maybe simply earth. Coarse and roughly tannic in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Initially there is a hint of sweetness in the nose, strawberries and sweet crackers. But once in the mouth, the wine turns tannic and thin, a simple red wine with an earthy character.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot features a simple, easy-to-like nose of jammy black currants and blackberries, but turns a bit syrupy on the palate and then falls flat on the finish. Lacks definitive structure, so drink now.

Paul Thomas Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 1997

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light gold in color, it offers up some pineapple and vanilla notes, along with an overripe pear quality on the nose. In the mouth, the flavors seem somewhat disjointed—the vanilla-oak component fights with with the modest fruit instead of complementing it. The finish is short and sweet.

Shows impressive complexity and restraint. Mineral and apple aromas are followed by almond, stone and mineral notes. Very crisp, with excellent length and a chalky, mineral-tinged finish. A Northwest version of a Puligny-Montrachet that demands a few years to show its best. Best Buy.
