Tart and lean, with aromas that range in a narrow band from green tobacco to tomato leaf and flavors that are also tomatoey and a bit unripe.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This straggler from the fine 2001 vintage has dusty aromas and a nose similar to 7-Up. A palate of Mandarin orange, sweet melon and sugarcomb precedes a slightly tiring finish. Tasty and fruity, but not as zesty as the best.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dull and earthy on the nose, with tree bark aromas and not a lot of fruit. Thankfully, it recovers on the palate, offering up intense black cherry flavors and a helping of dusty earth couched in supple tannins. Long and powerful on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Soft and round with seductive notes of cherry, vanilla and gianduja (chocolate with hazelnuts), this is a big, powerful New World Barolo that puts on a pretty show. Background notes of licorice root and exotic spice add to the wine’s naturally thick, dense feel. Drink it with mild lamb curries after 2015.

A word of warning: Decant. If you are planning to drink this within the next few years, decanting should help the sulfur aromas dissipate—then you'll be able to enjoy the chewy prune and date flavors. Brutally tannic at this juncture, but the tannins taste ripe, so just hold on until 2010 or beyond.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Barbera d’Alba opens with moderate, less exaggerated aromas of ripe fruit, prunes and plums. There’s also a very distinct oak note at the back that resembles Spanish cedar or mesquite. It does, however, offer nice pulp and succulence on the finish.

Easy, bright and sweet smelling, this vibrant Dolcetto offers an informal drinking match to home-cooked pasta and light meat dishes. The wine is soft and plush with firm structure.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This lively Barbaresco is distinguished by a drying mineral note that recalls black slate or graphite. Aromas of Spanish cedar, root beer and licorice are followed by dark fruit and plum. The wine is controlled, compact and tight in the mouth and it’s almost ready to drink. Drink after 2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This rock-solid, earthy rendition comes from an Alba co-op, proving that good things come in all shapes and sizes. Lots of leather and mushroom guard the fruit on the nose, while in the mouth, prune and black cherry score points. It’s a wine that’s in form; a dark, delicious coffee-laden middleweight.

Some early spice and tobacco grace the nose, but that same bouquet turns grassy and green real quick. Chunky on the palate, with disparate raspberry and cranberry flavors. Quite grippy, and veering toward sour.
