Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s an easy and openly friendly Dolcetto di Dogliani with simple fruit aromas of blueberry and forest fruit. In the mouth, however, the wine is far more expressive thanks to its spicy tones of freshly ground black pepper and Indian spice.

The longer this wine sits in the glass, the more beautiful its aromas become. It opens with a dark and rich appearance and vibrant notes of blueberry, wild berry and exotic spice. There’s a slightly lactic note at first that slowly evolves into milk chocolate and fudge.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This rich and thick Dolcetto opens with an inky, dark appearance and vinous aromas of blackberry and smoked ham. What the wine lacks in complexity, it makes up for in liveliness. Thick, textured tannins help the wine achieve good persistence and endurance. Most Dolcetto is designed to be consumed immediately, but this one promises more staying power.

Among the 2002 Dolcettos we’ve sampled, the ones from Dogliani have stood out for their greater depth and intensity of flavor. This one boasts a dark purple hue and dense, plummy fruit. It’s a supple mouthful of flavor that goes down easily yet retains a sense of structure and balance.

Gorgeous fullness and generosity characterize this bold Barolo as do its aromas of black cherry, spice, teriyaki and toasted hazelnut. San Giuseppe presents a classic expression of Nebbiolo that is especially evident in the fine, polished nature of the mouthfeel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of the deeper, more complex Dolcettos out there; lots of dark fruit mingles with oak to form an earthy edge accented by coffee. It’s probably too tannic for its own good, but who’s complaining about the seriousness of this wine?

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Pecchenino began with promising dark berry fruit aromas, mixed with black pepper. Rich and fruit forward, with soft tannins, and good structure. There was, however, a slight volatility to the wine which was more pronounced on the palate. The fruit still dominated, but the wine faded to a short finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s a dark and brooding Barolo that opens with masculine aromas of dark fruit, Indian spice, black tea, tar, resin and licorice. The intensity and complexity are impressive. The wine needs five more years of bottle aging to soften those young tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pecchenino has produced a lovely Nebbiolo-based wine with elegant tones of licorice and tar followed by fresh layers of forest fruit and chopped mint. It feels tight and compact in the mouth with a long finish driven by silky tannins.

This expression of Nebbiolo from the Le Coste vineyard opens with fresh and vibrant aromas of cherries, raspberries and cassis. Those fruit notes are enhanced by spice, vanilla and smoky highlights that brighten up the wine’s firm but streamlined mouthfeel.
