Shows lots of rich varietal character and classy tannins that frame cassis and mocha flavors that finish dry. There’s a bit of sharpness mid-palate that suggests a few years of age will help the wine work out its kinks. Best 2007–2009.

Wines like this advance Lake County’s claim to be the Sauvignon Blanc capital of California. With very high acidity, this unoaked wine stimulates the tastebuds with pure citrus zest, apricot and green grass flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From 72-year old vines grown in an interior Mendocino location that has a very wide summer temperature swing. Cool nights have preserved vital acidity, but the heat took its toll, resulting in a sugary sweetness and high alcohol.

Here’s a rich, complex, savory Zin from the coolish south-central part of the valley. The vines were planted only in 2000, but the wine has the density of the old vine Zins that border the vineyard. The wild raspberry, coffee, cola and peppery spice flavors finish thoroughly dry, with rich tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Deeply colored, deeply flavored and slightly off-dry, this wine has cherry pie filling flavors sprinkled with vanilla and cinnamon. It’s a simple blush sipper.

Great Zin. It’s robust and brawny, in the way of Zin, with the rustic wild berry, nettle, chamomile and spice flavors you expect from the variety, but shows good control in the smooth tannins and modulated alcohol. Picks up extra points for sheer deliciousness.

Pellegrini’s Vintner’s Pride Encore is pleasant on the nose with ripe red fruit and a hint of spice that continues on the palate. Bright acidity and tightly grained tannins make for a good midpalate, but the finish ends on a slightly green, bitter note.

Pellegrini Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smoky, herbal, green pepper and cassis aromas suggest Cabernet Sauvignon as the predominant component of this Bordeaux blend. Austere and tannic, but there’s plenty of flavor interest, including a touch of buttery, toasty oak. This wine will never be rich or expansive; instead it offers a Bordeaux-style, intellectual experience.

After a slight sulfur odor blows off, enough pear and vanilla scents emerge to warrant interest. On the palate though, it comes across as a typically lean East Coast Chard overdressed in American oak.

Gold color. The floral and spicy nose shows quince and peach-pie notes. Syrupy sweet, with a slight metallic tang - like the canned peaches mom used to pack for school lunch. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer that doesn’t quite come together on the palate.
