Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts with earthy burnt aromas, but in short time cassis and berry aromas rise to the surface. Fresh and tangy feeling, with spunky red fruit and tomato flavors. Finishes a little saucy, with more tomato and an herbal aftertaste.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts with nutty, oily, acrid aromas, and never is there much fruit character. The palate has bite but still seems short on acidity, and the flavors run toward funky citrus, asparagus and green beans. On the global scale of SB, this doesn’t really cut it.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sweet-tart aromas are a bit pickled but hang in there. The palate has weight but decent acidity, and the grapefruit and pickled melon rind flavors are briney yet tasty. Better than acceptable but not much beyond that.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
If a little left-over sugar doesn't bother you than this wine will register in a positive way. For beginners, the bouquet dances with rose hip, red licorice and cherry notes, and next the palate has real flavor and layering. Yes, it's kind of sweet and manufactured. But it's also got zest and pleasant pomegranate and pink grapefruit flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Uncomplicated and dominated by red fruit aromas and flavors. This is your everyday type of red wine that could probably be made from just about any grape or blend of grapes. Here, Tempranillo and 15% Shiraz make for a dry, mildly oaky red with freshness and little else. Fine if you’re not looking for anything special.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fairly deep and dark, with ripe plum and blackberry aromas. Transitions to meaty black cherry and plum flavors, which are followed by a round finish accented by chocolate and mocha. Medium to full-bodied; good value in basic red wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Penascal has emerged as one of those value brands that delivers. This installment of Tempranillo is full of berry, prune and leather aromas, while the palate is creamy and rather full, with smooth berry notes and more than adequate richness.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Chunky but also lively, with pungent, aggressive Sauvignon aromas of prickly fruit, grapefruit and greens. The palate is heavy and all about pink grapefruit, while the texture is thick. Has its good points; and it’s varietally correct.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Perfectly nice and fresh, with fruity springtime aromas that offers slight touches of nettle and citrus. Tropical flavors emerge from the spritzy palate, while the finish is both sweet and spicy. Shows some residual sugar but not too much. Imported by HAB North America.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pungent and prickly at first, but then it loses some of that zest as it opens. Chalky on the palate, with celery and citrus flavors. Lengthy enough on the finish, with hints of peaches and mineral. Imported by HAB North America.
