Bananas, mineral and cheese make for a less-than-appealing nose. The tart apple and citrus flavors on the palate are just acceptable as they lead into an adequately smooth finish that could be the wine’s saving grace. Thin and lacking as a whole, but not offensive or poor. From Australia with age.

This medium-sized Shiraz has flavors of oak and tangy red plum, and a sweet barbecue-and-toffee nose. Its powdery tannins are pretty, but don’t hide the fact that the palate is a little hollow. Finishes with smooth, oaky tannins.

Smells of red fruit, caramel, ginger and allspice, with black plum fruit and leafy flavors on the palate. Its alcohol is quite noticeable, though. Finishes dense and black.

Really nicely done, with bold cassis aromas tinged with hints of tomato leaf and vanilla and then waves of cassis, vanilla and dried spices on the palate. It’s full bodied and lushly textured, with a long, velvety feel to the finish. Best from 2010–2020.

Coonawarra is supposed to be Cabernet country, but Shiraz can do well there too. This is a full-bodied, rich wine that manages to be hugely concentrated yet not overly heavy. Leathery, meaty, bacony notes are layered over plummy fruit, while berry notes emerge on the finish, dusted in coffee and cocoa. Drink now–2020.

Lush and oaky, this is a full-bodied mouthful of coffee, chocolate and loam flavors. The fruit is so ripe it presents as chocolate, framed by toasty oak and buttressed by incredibly soft tannins. The softness suggests pairing with roasts or braised meats; drink now–2012.

A big, powerful wine, but one that also manages to convey a sense of elegance, Penley’s 2004 Reserve Cabernet is plummy-ripe, with chocolaty overtones and lashings of smoky oak. Yet the tanins are supple, imparting a creamy texture to this large-scaled wine. A crisp, slightly herbal note on the finish helps lighten the overall impression. Drink now–2020.

Though it’s a little on the tight side, the Penley’s palate shows black- cherry and smoked-meat flavors, and a red-berry-and-spice finish. Reviewers were up in arms about whether it was smoked meat and mint, or marshmallow, hot pepper and cake flour on the nose. In any case, an unusual bouquet. Give it two or three years.
