Smells caramelly and Porty, then tastes sweet and hot, with a sugary, blackberry jam finish. Some will like this style.

Not a lot of aromas in this 14.9% old-vine Zin, though a touch of fruit shows up mid-palate. Pretty so-so.

Soft and sweet, with candied, pie-filling flavors of blackberries, cherries and raspberries. Drink this country-style wine with simple foods.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Thick in sandpapery tannins, this Petite Sirah shows very ripe, sweet flavors of blackberry jam, currants, chocolate, raisins and pepper. It’s rustic now, and likely to remain so over a long lifespan.

Very dry and tannic, this Zin needs rich, fatty fare to wake it up. By itself it makes your mouth numb, and the high alcohol feels hot and peppery. But there’s a lot of rich blackberry and cherry stuff going on. Throw some meat on the grill, get it good and charred, and the wine will work.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows Petite Sirah’s brawny nature at its best, with drily firm, gritty tannins and a powerful assault of blue and black stone fruits and berries, baker’s chocolate, espresso and dusty spices. The tannins really control the palate, suggesting ageability. Seems like the kind of wine that can go for decades.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows the faults of common California Viognier, a sweet, simple and cloying wine with syrupy flavors of canned peaches, apricots and pineapples.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Delicious in briary blackberry jam, cherry pie, currant, milk chocolate, black pepper and anise flavors, with a touch of sweet oak, and the finish is totally dry. It’s a little too soft in structure, but fine if you’re in the mood for Zinfandel.

Black-currant, dark-chocolate and blackberry aromas are pretty enough, and so are the lively flavors. Surprisingly rich and delicate for this price, with a penetrating sweet finish. Has the structure of more expensive Cabs, although not the complexity or stuffing.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Another love-it-or-hate-it wine that ended up with a mid-80s score. Supporters touted the wine’s blackberry and blueberry fruit and richly textured tannins that should allow the wine to improve with age, while detractors focused on candied fruit and a finish they found short.
