Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and aromatic, toasted oak, very perfumed, tropical fruits and sweet honeyed scents; sweet and very ripe in the mouth, a classic California style with very ripe flavors, slightly toasted flavors, oak; spicy and lemony in the mouth, but with round edges; very fresh and balanced at the finish; a real treat of the California style and as good as it gets. (20/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Ripe nose with toasted aromas, cookie dough, citrus fruit and hints of white pepper; sweet fruit on the palate with a classic buttery texture, lemony and citric in the mid-mouth, but this wine is somewhat lacking; all of the elements seem to be there, but yet the wine is somehow hollow in the middle, and lacks the grip that one expects from a top producer such as this. (16.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Wonderfully rich and ripe fruit aromas, honeyed and floral with strong perfumed scents, but also mixing well with classic aromas of sour cabbage and minerals; smooth, rich and silky in the mouth; with deeply flavored fruit; there is so much texture that the wine feels almost thick in the mouth; long finish but with a touch of bitterness from the oak at this stage; good composition and balance. (18/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
The first nose of this sauvignon blanc is soft and light, but it picks up more depth and nuance as it remains in the glass, taking on more floral and perfumed notes, and a deep, rich, ripe sweet fruit aroma that borders on tropical; sweet and smooth in the mouth, silky, almost thick; sweet fruit with touches of honey and lime; pleasant if not particularly complex or deep; long smooth finish, pleasant in many ways. (16/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and perfumed nose opens this wine, with a touch of smoke, green herbs, minerals, and lots of sweet oak; sweet and rich at the opening gun, the wine brings together more nuance and complexity as its opens in the glass with citrus fruit and good spicy intrusions; not a complex wine, it has nice textures though and a pleasant ripeness. (15.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Big, intense nose with cracked black pepper, black fruits, hints of tar and earth, smoke, intense and almost dense on the nose, classic California; big and intense in the mouth with powerful flavors; spicy and peppery with black cherry concentrate; this is very much in keeping with the style that this winery employs with its Cabernets, long finish, spicy and powerful but balanced acidity; would be interesting to see how this ages. (17/20)

Peter Michael “Moulin Rouge” Napa Valley Pinot Noir - 2002

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Disappointing despite the early reviews from the likes of Steven Tanzer; light nose, elegant but distant, hints of orange peel, minerals, earth, smoked wood, lightly perfumed; this is the first bottling of this particular vineyard; sweet and spicy in the mouth, exotic and slightly tropical, good acidity; but does not hold the flavor at the finish. (16.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
A wine with a great reputation, this bottle was a big disappointment; it appears not to have completed its fermentation, as it poured into the glass cloudy, and with the unmistakable aroma of fermentation still evident; it took a day in the glass for it to clear; there is a very sweet nose of sugar and vanilla, minerals, some complexity but overall simple and uninteresting; very sweet in the mouth with unfinished flavors; little in the way of acidity or depth; short sweet finish; this has to be a bad bottle, and I’ll try another later in the year. (12/20)
