A wine that is going to show great elegance and style, produced from the tiny, steep Goldwingert vineyard in Ürzig. At the moment, the yeastiness is prominent, but it doesn’t hide the beautiful black-currant flavors, intense acidity and pure fruit. —R.V.

Fairly priced for an auslese of this quality, Nicolay’s 2009 from the Bernkasteler Badstube is lean yet luscious, with a wiry frame of taut citrus upon which hang riper notes of ripe peaches and apricots. The finish is long and vibrant, echoing with pure fruity deliciousness.

The Peter Nicolay estate belongs to the wife of Peter Pauly of Pauly-Bergweiler, and the two properties are run together. The wine is young, with yeasty aromas. The palate is hugely rich, with lovely ripeness and great sweetness. This is a big, rich intense wine, with flavors of botrytis and crisp honey. —R.V.

This crisp, easy-drinking entry-level Riesling from the Peter Nicolay estate represents a good buy. It’s plump, with a nice balance of sweet and tart ripe apples and zesty limes that provide great refreshment value.
