Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This single-vineyard Champagne is always at the summit in Champagne. The 1998 is just at the moment when the fresh fruits move into maturity. There is toast, almond and marzipan, while at the same time pink grapefruit crispness is still there. Drink it now for freshness; keep for many years for maturity.

Only disgorged in 2007, this fine vintage wine has preserved all its freshness. There are white fruits, pear juice, a crisp texture. They combine well to create a wine with considerable minerality, flinty, but full in the mouth. Age over the next 4–5 years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Unusual in the Philipponnat range (normally dominated by Pinot Noir), this blanc de blancs is a blend of Chardonnays from the Côte des Blancs and from the Montagne de Reims. It is lightly toasty, dry and fresh with a creamy texture and white fruit flavors. It’s ready to drink, very light, poised and crisp.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An extra dry Champagne created to commemorate the founding of Philipponnat in 1522 (the firm is still run by the same family). This is a particularly mature style of Champagne, rich and biscuity. With fresh acidity, and a dry finish, this is definitely a food Champagne. Imported by Ex-Cellars Wine Agencies, Inc.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Philipponnat’s 1522 cuvée is a reference to the date of the first record of Philipponnat as grape growers in Ay. It’s one of their top wines, and shows off the food- friendly, rich style typical of this producer. It’s ripe, rounded, full-bodied, and dominated by Pinot Noir giving it great depth of flavor. It’s also a wine meant for aging.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A dry style, this classic nonvintage from Philipponnat is showing well, with greater depth than in the past. The wine has maturity, with toast, almonds and cookies, but retaining the acidity to give a wine that is mouthfilling and also refreshing.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bravo to Philipponnat for indicating both the vintage that is the base of this blend (2006) and the date of disgorgement of the bottle (September 2008). It should be standard practice. The wine is full, very wine-like in the house style, but retaining plenty of freshness. This fine rosé will improve for another six months.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This famed single vineyard on its steep slope above Mareuil-sur-Aÿ produces a warm, always elegant wine. This 1999 is softer than some vintages, while still having a power and texture to go with fruit that is now maturing, giving a yeasty final character. Drink now, or age another few years.

Salmon-pink in color, this delicious rosé has great elegance and pure red fruit flavors. Finishes fresh, with lively acidity and almond flavors. A great apéritif style of rosé. Imported by Ex-Cellars Wine Agencies, Inc.

A powerful wine that is very ripe and soft. What makes it work so well is the toast, the acidity from a high proportion of Pinot Noir, and the dense, full structure. This is, without question, a food wine. It should also age over 4–5 years at least.
