Despite the cheesy note to the nose, the rest of this wine is rock solid. The bouquet features solid oak cloaking berry fruit, while on the palate you’ll find cherry, cassis and licorice. With its soft, simple finish along with bits of chocolate and vanilla, it’s a nice Cabernet. From the Tupungato subregion.

Other than showing orange and tangerine, the nose is a bit too much like air freshener. In the mouth, it’s wet but on the hollow side, with dilute innocuous flavors. Decent but low on flavor; seemingly fading.

Rubbery and heady on first blush, with gaseous, leathery aromas that initially cloud the wine’s fruit components. With time it evolves, showing dark cherry, raspberry and leathery flavors in front of an herbal, persistent finish. A little choppy and inconsistent but still a very good Malbec from a tough vintage.

Dark, smoky aromas suggest prune, licorice, coconut and shoe polish. The palate is sharper than the color would indicate, while flavors of dark berry, licorice and plum vie with oak then bitterness. Pinched and tangy at points, but balanced by oaky softness. 65% Malbec with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

A touch soupy and leafy on the nose, with a green element as well. The palate feel is clacky and firm, with herbal berry and green finishing flavors. Better in terms of feel and structure than flavors and aromas; a marginal Cab from a cool year.

A little toasty but not too much, with apple, pear and other standard New World aromas. The palate is smooth, tropical and easygoing, with buttery, warm flavors of melon and apple. Holds it together on the finish.

A sweet cherry essence characterizes the playful bouquet, while plenty of new oak adds mint and coconut. The palate is juicy, and a starburst of rugged, young fruit is prominently on display. Maybe it could use a bit more weight and darkness to rate excellent; but what’s here is more than casual and well worth a go.

Piattelli is an under-the-radar label that makes very good to excellent Malbec from old vines in Luján del Cuyo, Mendoza. And the prices are more than fair. This wine is big and focused, with intense blackberry, chocolate and espresso qualities throughout. And the finish is midnight dark. Good through 2012.

Blackberry and raspberry aromas are dark and dense, and overall the nose is jammy. That heaviness carries onto the palate, where flavors of plum and blackberry are thick. A dark finish of licorice is solid but not terribly interesting or complex. Voluminous but not refined.

A very good Torrontés with sweet melon and tropical fruit aromas. The palate is rich and softening with age, but there’s depth and quality to the mango and melon flavors. Finishes creamy but not cloying or fat. Drink now.
