Very darkly fruited, this full-bodied wine offers layered bark-chocolate, cherry and espresso aromas and flavors. The palate is smooth and suavely textured, and this sleeper has refined tannins on the long, classy finish.

This is a pretty Chianti with a strong mineral element that recalls crushed stone and granite. You’ll also get background aromas of wild berry and raspberry that are enhanced by light shadings of spice and smoke. In the mouth, the wine is compact and bright.

This is a cheerful Tuscan Merlot with an odd ensemble of aromas that includes red berry, spice, minerals and crushed vitamins. The wine is tart and fresh in the mouth with solid but smooth tannins and would pair well with gourmet hamburgers or chicken in barbecue sauce.

Here’s a darkly concentrated, syrupy wine with impenetrable density and sweet aromas of coffee, chocolate, cinnamon and cherries. The wine is huge in the mouth with chewy succulence, astringency and enormous power: It’s almost too much of a good thing and has none of the delicate characteristics you usually associate with Sangiovese.

Thick, impenetrable and darkly concentrated, this bold Syrah from Tuscany awards aromas of spice, blueberry and natural rubber. The only concern is that those rubbery smells will turn into Band Aid and animal fur with more time in the bottle. Don’t wait to drink it.
