Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Exceedingly lean and tart, with crisp cherry aromas that indicate that what’s to come will be stripped back and tight. And what do you know? The palate is all about tart cherry, cranberry and red raspberry, all sitting on a bed of prickly acidity. Not what most are looking for in a full-priced Tuscan red.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Built like a modern Chianti, with 90% Sangiovese supported by 10% Merlot and Cabernet, this red from the south of Tuscany is lean and dry. It has an elegant texture and feel, and black-cherry and cedar aromas and flavors. Fine tannins and a leathery note mark the finish.

A bit yellow in color, with licorice gumdrop, anise and mineral aromas. It offers a tight grip across the palate and good balance. Flavors of citrus and papaya are smooth, and the finish is drying. Overall, there’s just the right amount of apple, mineral and soda cracker to warrant the thumbs up.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The bouquet of strawberry and plum is simple and open. The palate, meanwhile, is tangy, with raspberry and cherry flavors. A bit of licorice and wood spice on the finish adds character. Still, it’s a lean, juicy, acidic red.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Trebbiano grapes for this delicious dessert white are hung in the attic for three months in the traditional manner. Aromas of ripe grapes, citrus fruits, butterscotch and hazelnuts yield to a nutty palate more rich than sweet. Still has plenty of acid backbone and finishes long with apricot notes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Aromas of grapefruit, herb and almonds open to a mouthful of melon and peach in this medium-weight dry white. It has a bit more texture than most Vernaccias, a clean, crisp finish and an attractive back perfume with a touch of bitter almond.

Pietrafitta White Blend - 1999

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A traditional Chianti blend is used here, including a small proportion of white grapes, and it shows how good an inexpensive wine made well in the traditional manner can be. The ripe cherry core sports tea and spice accents, and a chalk note appears on the palate. It closes with fine tannins and a dusty rose note.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The smoked-meat and sugar-beet nose is not that opulent, but it’s generally clean and welcoming. The palate offers your basic berry fruit mix, which is followed by a tight, mildly tannic finish with a long espresso-like tail. It’s a solid if pedestrian wine that shouldn’t disappoint the average red-wine drinker. —M.S.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A bit flat and dusty at first, but then it opens to reveal aromas of peach and flowers. Flavors of pineapple and green apple are clean and solid, while the finish offers a bit of chewable vitamin flavor along with good acidity. Tang and crispness are the wine’s overriding characteristics.

This is an easy, simple white wine with candy-like aromas of butterscotch and caramel. In the mouth, it offers fresh peach flavors and a short, crisp finish.
