Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Five years after the vintage, this is a fully mature Shiraz that shows off the Clare Valley’s trademark acidity. Savory notes of bacon and spice add complexity to plum-like fruit, while the tannins are supple—the structure here is acid-based, not reliant on heavy extraction.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bright red fruit, cedar and creamy aromas on the nose tricked one reviewer into thinking that this bouquet smelled a little like stewy, fake fruit. A smooth, even mouthfeel compensates for the tart mocha-wood-pepper notes that obscure fruit on the palate. Minerals, chalk and tannins wrap it up.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a reliable Clare Valley producer, Pikes 2006 Dry Riesling appears to be an ageworthy effort, boasting plenty of crisp intensity. Lime, grapefruit and green apple notes are classic Riesling markers, ending long and mouthwatering. Drink now–2016, possibly beyond. Imported by USA Wine West.

Tasted twice with differing impressions; this score represents the average of the two. One look at the wine showed roasted aromas, and an orange-peel aroma, followed by sour red fruit on the palate. The second go revealed juicier fruit and pleasing, chalky tannins on the palate. Give it the benefit of the doubt. 600 cases produced. Imported by USA Wine West.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The White Mullet is an innovative blend of 70% Riesling, 11% Viognier, 10% Chenin Blanc and 9% Sauvignon Blanc. The result is fragrant with hints of orange zest and pineapple, and moderately mouthfilling without ever seeming overly soft. Simultaneously crisp, luscious and long on the finish, it’s a solid value.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pikes’ reserve-level Riesling is one to seek out. It has hints of fresh green herb interspersed with layers and layers of stony, minerally flavors. The wine is intense and has lively acidity and a long, smooth finish. 180 cases produced. Imported by USA Wine West.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s proof that Pikes can make more than just a good Riesling. This red is over half Shiraz, with equal parts Grenache and Mourvèdre. The cool-climate fruit has cherry and mint nuances; the body is feminine but sinewy, and quite classy, reserved but still flavorful.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells clean, but doesn’t show much more than cotton and kerosene on the nose. There’s a slight spritz at palate entry, but the wine smooths out into lime and mineral flavors afterward. A good-quality, pretty standard Riesling, and just the ticket with Thai food.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smooth and medium in weight, this is a fine example of the lavishly oaked style, the deep sweet cherry fruit wrapped in a dark, toasty cocoon with leathery accents adding interest. Even tannins, black-toast and coffee accents show on the long finish. There’s a lot of wood here, but it’s better-utilized than in many other wines.

Floral on the nose, this captures Viognier’s elusive fragrance in a peachy, spiced wine that’s plump but not overly heavy.
