Massive amounts of extracted, sun-baked fruit is on display, which may be a hedonistic blast for some and just too syrupy and ripe for others. The bouquet is dense and sugary, with little to no spice or rusticity. That same blackberry quality controls the palate. This is a new wine for the folks at Planeta and although this Syrah-based rosé looks luminous and beautiful in the glass (with a gorgeous bottle too), there is room for improvement. The wine’s aromas are weighed down by chalky mineral tones and mature berry fruit.

Planeta delivers a very likeable Merlot that showcases not only the purity of the variety, but the warmth and sunshine of Sicily. There are beautiful notes of plump cherry, succulent blackberry and exotic spice. The wine is perfectly integrated in terms of tannins and persistency.

Planeta’s Cerasuolo di Vittoria (a blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola that recently became the first Sicilian wine to earn a prestigious DOCG designation) offers beautiful integrity of fruit followed by simple berry and spice nuances. It ends with crisp freshness and cheerful flavors of raspberry and marzipan.

Planeta’s precious Moscato di Noto is always a pleasure to drink. This vintage is no exception; the wine is wonderfully generous and redolent of honey, apricot and bright yellow rose. It excels in the mouth, thanks to its perfect balance of sugar and acidity.

From one of Sicily’s flagship Chardonnay producers, here is a very attractive and luminous white with loads of butter, nut, almond, vanilla and banana. Dig in there and you get Golden Delicious apple and pineapple, too. Creamy and textured, this is an oak-dominated wine (10 months of barrel aging) with a crisp close. Imported by Vias Imports.

This is a delicate, polished and graceful wine that paints one of the most attractive portraits yet of the Nero d’Avola grape. Although some have criticized the fact its alcohol has increased over the last few years (now 14.5%), I would argue that its power is well integrated within its multifaceted and well-composed whole. Dark in color, with youthful aromas of black plum and leather. Fruity and forward the palate, with plum and chocolate flavors. Yes, it’s fairly tannic and heavy, but today most folks like a big, bulky wine that has something to say.
