Plush and full best describe this offering from Australia’s western coast. Starts with clove and licorice aromas, then tastes of the essence of berry fruit. It borders on jammy and syrupy, yet pulls back with some edginess. But not too much—it’s creamy and thick, with soft oak and milk chocolate.

Aged in French and American oak for 12 months, the wine’s weight is more reminiscent of Beaujolais than Shiraz. In terms of flavor, earthy, meaty notes take charge on the palate.

Tree bark and deep woods notes mix with plum notes for an intriguing opener, yielding to a palate with plummy, leathery flavors. Overall, it’s a bit lean, but the finish shows admirable length and mouthwatering acidity.

There's an herbaceous note to this wine's bouquet suggestive of bell pepper, but thankfully, it's not a dominant aroma--there's also plenty of cherry fruit. It's predominantly Merlot, with some Grenache blended in, and the result marries cherries with leafy, tobacco-like flavors.

A pretty good effort, this sub-$20 Pinot Noir features plenty of coffee-scented oak, but also some nice black cherry fruit. It’s on the full side, with round, voluptuous tannins and crisp acids, with a touch of warmth on the finish. Drink now.

A blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, Plantagenet's Hazard Hill white is fresh and grapefruity, with hints of melon to help round it out. Crisp acids and modest weight make it refreshing--it would be fine as an apéritif or with seafood. Drink now.

Nose is an outdoorsy mix of wood, earth and leather aromas. On the palate, red plum fruit is angular, and almost liqueurish. Tannins are chewy on the midpalate, and fade into a woody finish.

This red-fruited Shiraz is well made but not particularly complex. What there is, though, is nice: raspberries, vanilla, smoke and caramel, wrapped together in a medium-bodied wine that finishes on a tart note.
