New wood aromas dominate this wine. But underneath all that expensive wood there is a fine wine waiting to emerge. It has flavors of almonds, cherries and citrus peel, bound up in a rich, meaty stew. It is powerful and substantial, with a long vanilla and leather aftertaste.

We found some inconsistency in the lineup from Aldo Conterno, but this wine flat-out rocks. The rich, intense aromas layer vanilla, coffee and buttercream over a framework of tart cherries, which explode in the mouth into a panopoly of red fruits. The tannins are plentiful—creating a rich texture—yet supple, showing great ripeness on the finish.

There’s a lot to like in this wine: dried fruit and spices, leather and citrusy, floral aromatics. It’s pump and relatively full-bodied, featuring cherry, cranberry and milk chocolate flavors. Turns a bit too tart and citrusy on the finish, but it’s a solid effort best consumed from 2008–2016.

This beautifully executed wine opens with a garnet-brownish hue and follows through with an intense aromatic line-up of black currant, candied fruit, white truffle and licorice. It’s a textbook example of classic Barolo with the characteristic power and intensity of Nebbiolo. Drink after 2012.

The Conterno wines have long set the standard for more traditional Barolo. With its brown-red color and its aromas of ripe strawberries and dark plums, this wine combines powerful dried fruits with modern tannins and great concentration. It is an enormous wine that will age well over 15 years or more.

There’s more thickness and extraction here thanks to a sophisticated use of oak. You can taste the wood tones in the form of vanilla, tobacco and spice. Overall, this wine exhibits a bold, immediate style that is immensely seductive and tasty. Drink the wine after 2015 and pair it with important meat dishes.

Comprised entirely of Chardonnay, this medium-weight white blends ripe fruit aromas and flavors of peach and pear with less ripe notes of sweet peas and green beans. It’s not truly vegetal, but straddles the line. Imported by Vias Imports.
