Winery - Poet's Leap

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Poet’s Leap Riesling continues its string of outstanding vintages, once again exceptionally concentrated and complex. The high-acid 2008 vintage adds extra juicy vibrancy to the fruit, giving the wine an impression of dryness (though it is a bit over 1% residual sugar) and a dense, layered fruit component. A mix of old vine and German clones, this is a superb effort.

Deep gold, the color of honey, picked at 53° brix, this is unbelievably dense and concentrated. Yet with the acidity in place, this wine has balance, support, and depth. It’s not a fat, sugary blob. This drinks like a Canadian icewine. Honey, tropical fruits, candied orange, butterscotch, butter and toasted nuts—it just keeps on going.

Loaded with honeysuckle, melon, pear, peach and hints of sweet grapefruit, this juicy wine perfectly captures the intensity of Washington Riesling and the complexity of German wines. Buoyant and precise, with notes of chalk and limestone in the finish, this is a stunning achievement in a challenging vintage.

Elegant and refined, offering mixed citrus scents, a clean, fresh and lively mouthfeel built upon a generous core of melon, yellow plum and sweet citrus fruits. Despite its off-dry sweetness, its firm acids keep it food friendly. This is the first release from Long Shadows, a consortium of boutique wineries.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Poet’s Leap was the first wine to be released under the Long Shadows portfolio, and this 2005 is clearly its best yet. Old-vine Riesling from Dionysus and Weinbau form the core of the wine, which is immaculate, rich and generous. The fruits sound like a county fair in summer—melon, stone fruits, citrus, honey—and the mix of residual sugar (about 1.6%) and racy acids is thrillingly on target.

A Poet’s Leap botrytis-affected Riesling was first done in 2005; this is the second. Opens with a sensational smorgasbord of scents from honey and citrus to pineapple, celery, cucumber, orange blossom, lemon verbena and so on and on. Full bodied and extremely youthful, this has a long life ahead.

With residual sugar at about 1.35%, this balances the acidity without seeming sweet. Hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed, this immaculate, fresh, generous and stylish Riesling is always at the top of the list of Washington’s best. Loaded with grapefruit, citrus and stone flavors, it cleans the palate and piles on the details as it rolls into a finish that lingers for well over a full minute.

Poet’s Leap is the Long Shadows collaboration with Armin Diel of Germany’s Schlossgut Diel. Ripe pear, melon, and white peach mingle with a streak of honey. Old Yakima Valley vines contribute concentration, adding herb and mineral to the fruit. The residual sugar is about 1.4%, keeping the alcohol just under 13%, with acids that keep flavors buoyant and precise.

Round and warmly fruity, this is a lovely mix of grapefruit, stone fruits and light tropical flavors. Nice and spicy, balanced and harmonious, it has almost 2% residual sugar (and has been criticized for it) but it works well to soften and round out the acids.
