The wood tones are very evident although vibrant fruit notes are not totally masked: You’ll encounter cherry, forest berries and a very pleasing blast of menthol freshness. The wine drinks a bit young, with loads of oak nuances thanks to 10 months in tonneaux, and ends on a slightly sour note.

This is a truly outstanding Rosso di Montalcino that shows all the ripe and opulent characteristics of the promising 2008 vintage. The wine is rich, smooth and determined. The tannins are polished and silky.

Vintner Tiziano Ciacci delivers a beautifully extracted wine with rich ruby highlights backed by mature aromas of blackberry, dried currants, clove and cardamom. The wine is smooth and rich in the mouth with tight tannins and bright berry freshness.

Poggio Nardone offers an absolutely gorgeous Brunello with incredibly smooth, rich and beautiful aromas of mature blackberry, coffee, tobacco and smoky barbecue sauce. The wine’s texture is dense but also silky and the fruit-driven finish lasts many minutes.

Here is a vanilla- and cedar-infused wine that sparked discord among our panelists. One loved its complexity and spicy notes layered over ripe fruit, while another took issue with its stewiness. Plush tannins and fruit glide over a long finish. Imported by Romano Brands.

Sangiovese is enhanced by small percentages of Malvasia Nera and Colorino to deliver a plush, plump and satisfying Morellino from southern Tuscany. There’s a nice feeling of informality here that makes this wine perfect for easy meals with family and friends.
