Dark and meaty, this Syrah shows its hot-weather climate without losing all of its nuance. Hints of anise, meat and dried spices add a layer of flavor atop the chocolate and black cherry base, while the supple tannins and soft texture end gracefully.

It’s mainly (80%) Alicante Bouschet with 10% each Syrah and Touriga Nacional, but this wine bears something of a resemblance to Port. Dark chocolate and blueberry notes show up on the nose, although there are also bright raspberry and vanilla flourishes. Long and a bit peppery on the finish, this is a winter-weight red to have alongside braised meats.

Weirdly floral on the nose, reminiscent of strawberry- or cherry-scented candles and somewhat akin to air freshener. Very red-fruity on the medium-weight palate, with a sweet-tart quality. Tasted three times, with consistent notes.
