Woodsy berry aromas keep the nose upright and welcoming, but the palate doesn’t do much other than push generic raspberry and cherry skin flavors. It’s a forward, rather acidic wine that’s simple and straightforward.

Shows very nice fruit that’s both jammy and firm, and then add in meatiness, leather and rubber and you have an intense, tannic middleweight with cassis, dark berry and plenty of chocolate in terms of flavors. A bit fiery, biting and hard now; needs another year or two to soften.

Fairly hard and closed at first, with a chemical-smelling edge. It opens to show fruity raspberry flavors and a peppery accent, while the finish is snappy and doesn’t veer much from the primary palate. Kind of lean and sharp, but not a bad effort.

This wine is even more oaky than the Porta Reserve. From my vantage point, Porta’s Chardonnays benefit from the school of less is more. This one is dominated by wood and wood spice, much more so than its brothers. There’s also some vanilla in the mix, but it tastes artificial.

This wine, unlike the regular Porta bottling, comes across fat and bulky. It’s overloaded with tropical fruit and combative oak. And while better qualities seem to be fighting to show themselves, they can’t seem to fake it past the glaring oak. This is for barrel lovers only.

This reserve offering opens with great aromas of toast, smoked bacon, caramel, baked apple and pear. More of the same and pineapple notes are wrapped in toasty new oak and ride a ripe, buttery mouthfeel. The oak comes up strong on the finish, so be prepared, and oak lovers take note.

This wine needs some time to settle. The finish was course and gritty, but the pleasingly complex aromas were of dark sweet plums, fresh herbs and dusty chocolate. Flavors of currants with a hint of tea lead into a chewy mouthfeel.

Smoked meat and flowers comprise the aromatics, with lots of oak and berry fruit to the palate. The finish is tannic but not too much so, and there’s also some cherry, vanilla and coffee.

Vanilla and pear aromas strongly hint at sweetness, and the palate delivers melon and pineapple flavors but not much balance or elegance. It’s a fleshy, soft, overly fruity wine that stumbles to the finish line.
