Dark in color, with aromas of bacon and spice. The palate is tight-grained and woody, with ample berry fruit peeking through. Firm acids keep it fresh from start to finish, while the only thing holding it back is some hollowness to the midpalate.

Another wine from Portal del Alto that’s just on the cusp of drinkability. Potent butterscotch and cream aromas don’t seem authentic. Resiny flavors mask the fruit, and it finishes flat.

The bouquet is murky, with oak and funk but no clarity. The flavors are on the thinner side, and the light berry fruit carries a reedy note. Vanilla is the most identifiable note on the finish.

Dry, barrel-influenced and solid on the nose, with tempered aromas of black cherry and berry. The palate is juicy and shows good physical definition, while the flavors of raspberry and plum are good. Straight-ahead and solid on the finish.

On the oaky and charred side, but also showing varietal mint, chocolate and bell pepper aromas. The palate is slightly more acidic than it should be, which leaves an angular mouthfeel to go with cola, berry and bitter chocolate flavors. Turns decidedly herbal on the finish.

A touch horsey and sharp smelling, with rubber, leather and plum as well. The palate is acidic and thus racy, but there’s enough body and structure to properly house berry fruit and olive flavors. A little tangy on the finish due to strong acidity.
