Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The aromas are of tree bark, tea and cola. Juicy blackberry flavors burst onto your palate touched with spice and full but soft tannins, all of which makes this an enjoyable wine to drink now or through 2005. —C.S.

Ripe and even, this appealing Sonoman delivers a lovely perfume of cassis toast and white pepper. Plenty of oak keeps it dark and tart, but of the type, it’s very well done, with an even mouthfeel and long, tangy finish. This should be even better in two or three years.

Smoke, menthol and chocolaty oak frame crisp, juicy raspberry fruit in this California Syrah that’s true to its terroir. Tastes nothing like Central/Southern Coast versions.

Preston’s proprietary Sauvignon Blanc shows why Dry Creek Valley is so hospitable to this varietal. Rich and graceful. Although it’s on the grassy, herbal side, a little Sémillon adds richness and some real complexity. Defines Sauvignon style. Best Buy.

Preston releases their red wines relatively late, and the extra time in barrel and bottle softens the tannins, and gives the finished wines a rounded quality. This is a solid effort, true to varietal, with plummy fruit, good balance, and a nice chocolatey, toasty finish that has just a slight taste of bitter banana to it. Good, serviceable Merlot at a fair price.

This is what might be called old-style Washington Cabernet. The fruit is mixed liberally with bell pepper and dill; there is plenty of tannin and a distinctly earthy aroma of the barnyard that carries well into the finish. For some, it will be pleasantly reminiscent of cru Bourgeois Bordeaux.

Refreshingly lemony and clean, hereÕs a nice sipper for summer nights. The citrus and spice flavors could be more concentrated, and the acidity a bit firmer, but this dry white wine is fine for most occasions.

Ripe apples and whiskey barrel scents in the nose. The fruit tastes quite ripe, and there’s plenty of new oak wrapped around it. An off-putting bitterness mars the finish.

A tough, acidic wine with some bitter edges to it. Needs some time to soften up.

Cherry Kool-aid red, with a grapey, cherry-Lifesaver nose. Light cherry fruit tells the whole story. A wine to sip cold on a hot day.
