Plenty of sugar in this sweet wine, but it takes more than sweetness to make a great dessert red wine. There are blackberry, chocolate and coffee flavors, but the wine is sharp, and lacks the smooth, velvety mouthfeel that you want.

Very ripe and oaky, with forward flavors of blackberries and cassis, cloaked under sweet, charred-barrel oak influences. Could use greater balance and finesse.

Old and bitter, with the blackberry flavors drying into shriveled raisins and dessicated grapeskins. Feels dry and tannic, and not going anywhere.

Shows lots of class with crunchy, citrusy acidity brightening and cleansing the upfront fruit. The flavors are of lemons and limes, figs and green melons, drizzled with a splash of wild honey.

Nice and easy Cab, soft and pleasantly fruity, and you’d never guess its age because it tastes so fresh. Blackberries, cherries, chocolate and licorice, in a smooth, velvety texture.

Starts with lemon and melon aromas with a nice cut of smoke and mineral, and turns rich and fruity in the mouth. ThereÕs a strong dose of spice, and the finish is honeyed and a little sweet. ItÕs a clean drinking wine with charm.

Lots of well-toasted oak, brimming with vanilla, covers some awkward fruit. The oak doesnÕt taste natural, but like chips, or liquid smoke. The fruit is citrusy, although the wine does drink dry. The result is an odd, disagreeable drink.

Once upon a time this would be have a perfectly fine $8 wine. Now, itÕs an $18 wine, but itÕs still a nice drink. ItÕs very dry, and balances blackberry flavors with less ripe herbal ones, resulting in some complexity. The finish is dry and fruity-spicy. Soft in acids, but the rich tannins add structure and spine.

Normally a blending wine, because on its own this varietal offers sweetness and frangrance without accompanying body and depth, and this wine shows why. ItÕs pretty as a picture, with black raspberry flavors and soft tannins, but it seems to need a center of gravity, especially at this price.
