Medium in body yet with a slightly viscous texture, this entry-level offering shows some petrolly minerality and mirabelle plum tartness. It’s a solid effort, just lacks the vivacious, forward fruit you might expect in a young Riesling.

If German wine labels are confusing to Americans, labels like this one are one reason why. Traditionally this wine would be written as Roxheimer Berg, but for some reason this producer has written it Berg Roxheim. Green apple and diesel fuel aromas lead the way, followed by simple, fruity, apple flavors. Sweet and low in acidity, with a finish that’s close to cloying. Try this as a dessert sipper with fresh fruit. Imported by Valckenberg International, Inc.

Grapefruit and earth combine in this hard, difficult wine that needs to be paired with the right dishes to succeed. There’s no doubting its intensity and earthy concentration or its long, minerally finish, it’s just not as open and friendly as so many of the other wines from this vintage. —J.C.

This is a big, sturdy, dry Riesling, made to be matched with rich dishes. Limes combine with green floral notes on the nose to give a sense of freshness, then apple and peach flavors take over. The finish is long and intense, folding in hints of fresh mint. —J.C.
