Black spice, root beer, tar and a touch of smoke are backed by prune, plum and dried currants. You’ll also recognize aromas of green olive or caper and this Riserva Barbaresco is very elegant and feminine overall. Don’t wait too long to drink this wine, it’s at its height now.

Pora is an excellent cru with west- and south-facing vineyards that is known to produce Nebbiolo with a great capacity for aging. Indeed, this Riserva seems to yearn for more time in the bottle. It has direct aromas that carry a hint of greenness in the form of tar, curry leaf and crushed peppercorn. The mouthfeel is soft, full and feminine. Drink after 2015.

This historic producer sources some of the best local fruit for its elegant Barbaresco. Aromas include cassis, dried blueberry and cola, but there’s also a good dose of licorice, spice and dark smoke. The wine shows excellent texture with firm, drying tannins and a bright, polished feel.

This luscious and opulent Riserva is a standout expression of Nebbiolo. Considered the most “Baroloesque of the Barbaresco crus,” the Montestefano vineyard generally offers greater structure and a longer finish. You get that here backed by extraordinarily refined aromas of cola, licorice, almond skin, resin, dried apple and tart white cherry.

This vibrant Barbaresco opens with loads of oak-inspired aromas and sweet spice with background tones of forest fruit, bramble, tar, cedar and licorice. The tannins are drying, firm and fuel the wine’s long finish.

Vibrant buoyancy and firm tannins make this a very successful rendition of Barbaresco. The wine balances elegance—aromas of small berry fruit and cherry cola—with substance (Indian spice, ginger and licorice powder). Long-lasting layers of smoke and spice complete the finish.

Here’s a bright and very polished Riserva Barbaresco with clean and focused aromas of white cherry, cola, wild berries and dried currants. This expression from the Pora cru (known for its cellar-worthy wines) shows good acidity and drying tannins.

The region’s famous co-op continues to turn out solid, traditionally styled wines. Although the crus are the ones to seek out, the blended wine is often a good value. This vintage seems built with firmer structure than in the past, finishing hard and tannic. Aromas and flavors are pretty amalgams of cherries, tea leaves and stone fruits, but will they outlast the tannins?

A solid effort from Barbaresco’s local cooperative, which should augur well for its single-vineyard riservas that will be released later this year. The normale is a fairly priced, somewhat herbal and tannic wine that shows enough cherry fruit and minty complexity to anchor it in the Very Good range. Astringent on the finish, so give it some time in the cellar or drink with rare beef. Imported by Vias Imports.
