Medium garnet in color, suggesting only moderate extraction. Cherry and fine leather aromas are appealing, but not terribly concentrated or complex. It’s a solid, if somewhat acidic, effort from organically grown grapes.

The Basarin cru has performed very nicely in 2007 by absorbing the heat, but not in an exaggerated way. This expression opens with ripe fruit notes, black cherry and wild raspberries with elegant background tones of graphite, smoke and blue flower. The wine imparts an elegant and smooth feel thanks to the polished nature of its tannins.

Organic and biodynamic Punset offers Nebbiolo-based wines that are very difficult to assess. Try them too young (as in this case) and the wines often lack clarity and balance. Wait ten years or more and they blossom into something very special indeed. The 2008 Campo Quadro illustrates this point exactly.

Barbaresco Basarin by organic and biodynamic producer Punset is a bit strange aromatically at first with earthy aromas of cured meat and pressed red rose. The trick here is to wait for the wine to finish its evolution and open the bottle in five years or more.

Always the standout in a crowd, Punset (organic and biodynamic growers in Barbaresco) presents an elegant and austere Riserva. Aromas here include wet stone and green herbs, rosemary or wild sage, followed by taut density and tight tannins. Let this wine age 5–10 more years.

Punset releases its wines much later than others and its organic, Nebbiolo-based wines really do need a lot of time in the bottle before they are ready to drink. Take this 2004 Barbaresco: The wine is very alive and bright with firm tannins and a long finish that will gain traction over the next decade.

Campo Quadro is an organically grown Barbaresco with a lean appearance and pristine aromas that are typical of Nebbiolo such as tar, licorice, violets, spice and blackberries. The mouthfeel is compact and tight with great intensity and a blast of power on the close. The wine is ready to drink now.

This fortified Nebbiolo-based wine can be consumed as an after-dinner bitter. The aromas recall root beer, medicinal herbs, cough syrup and juniper berry. Its natural bitterness sends a shock to the body: the wine has been infused with sugar, herbs and spices.

Here’s a rich, ripe expression of Barbaresco with loads of bright fruit followed by generous notes of exotic spice and scented candle. The wine is smooth, rich and drinkable almost immediately. Or, you could safely cellar this wine five years or more: the natural fruit promises to evolve evenly over the years.

Punset is a very interesting organic and biodynamic winery that tends to release its vintages much later than the others. This 2004 Riserva Barbaresco is amazingly intense and complex with deep layers of cola, white licorice, balsam notes, forest berry and dried mint. Drink from 2015–2020.
