Pleasant all the way, starting from the cedar, leather and dark-fruit aromas, to the zippy cherry and raspberry palate, to the clean, spicy finish. Tart, linear and refreshing, a Chianti in textbook proportions.

Fairly scattered and unfocused on the nose, with herb, gumdrop and barrel aromas. Light on the palate, with oak and simple red fruit. Finishes zesty, but on the thin side.

Smoky on one hand, but also featuring a touch of burnt grass on the nose. Tart cherry and thin plum flavors with hints of leather and spice comprise the palate. Finishes lemony crisp.

Earthy and round, with a saturated hue. In the mouth, berry and plum flavors precede a clean, moderately long finish that scores points for its cleanliness and simplicity. Nothing overtly thrilling but certainly no faults either. It’s yet another easy drinking Chianti from the fine ’01 vintage.

Starts with heavy sulfuric aromas, which fade to unveil espresso, leather and chunky fruit. Boysenberry and vanilla flavors are bolstered by a streak of oak-based lemon, while the finish is dry and tight, leaving coffee flavors in its wake.

Clean fresh-berry aromas lead into a lean, leathery palate with tart cherry fruit and tight, astringent tannins. It isn’t a bad wine; but it’s definitely lean as a wisp and drying. Undoubtedly it will work best with food.

Lightweight but smooth, with open-knit aromas of red fruits. The palate shows more richness than you might expect, with black cherry and dark plums controlling the flavor profile. With meat on its bones and a persistent finish, this is bargain Chianti at its best.

The elements of cherry, mint and cedar on the nose show a touch of age, and the dry cherry fruit on the palate seems to vie with wood for prominence. Overall it’s quite angular, but does show some attractive earthy notes and a chalky element on the finish.

A real winner from the wonderful 1997 vintage. Beautiful fruit with rich aromas of cherry, leather, clove and earth. Ripe and juicy on the palate, easy and accessible. Enough depth of flavor and mouthfeel for pairing with real food. Not about breeding or refinement, but who cares at $11? Best Buy.

Dark cherry, tea and anise notes on the nose. Attractive cherry-raspberry, pepper and spice on the palate. Lean and a bit chewier than the 1997 normale, but more complex. Shows well-dispersed tannins on the peppery finish.
