Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The first vintage of table wines from Quinta do Noval has resulted in two wines in the style of Bordeaux chateau. This wine is the equivalent of the estate’s second wine. It is initially herbal, medicinal almost, but the fruit bursts out with intense black flavors and freshness, with an intensity that promises well over the next 4–5 years.

Ripe and juicy, a wine that wears its heart on its sleeve. It is perfumed, with the 2007 freshness and a fine layer of nutmeg coming through the blackberry juice flavor. For medium-term aging.

The lighter vintage from Noval lives up to its style, well balanced, fresh, showing the fruitiness of the year. It is elegant, with everything already in balance.

This is not a shy wine. It expresses the heat and ripeness of the Douro fruit. But it also manages to bring in superlative structure and tannins, balancing these with the black plums, very ripe berries and fresh acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of the vintage’s standouts, the 2000 Quinta do Noval is incredibly rich and intense, with a density that made me think I should reach for a spoon. Chocoate and coffee, prune and date aromas; plum cake flavors. Despite the richness, there is a superb backbone of acidity and ripe tannins that suggests peak maturity is probably two decades or more away.

A reasonably good buy in vintage Port, Silval is something of a second label for Quinta do Noval. It’s less concentrated and suppler in the mouth than its sister wine, but still boasts compelling floral aromas allied to prune, berry and chocolate flavors. Worth trying a bottle before 2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A heavy, powerful wine, with very concentrated tannins. Flavors of licorice, bitter chocolate and black plums give a sense of richness and opulence. Still young, the aromas are yeasty, but these should open up for a rich, dense wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A wine that has the characteristic 2004 perfume character, with vanilla, almost opulent fruits and layers of nutmeg. There are blackberry and apple pie flavors and firm, dry tannins. Bottled unfiltered, suggesting aging potential.

There is plenty going on in Noval’s 20-year-old. It is a dry style, but the generous fruit combines marmalade and fresh citrus flavors, along with powerful ripeness. Acidity is there too, giving a lift at the end.

This is the equivalent of the top wine, or grand vin. It is certainly impressive, and probably needs at least 10 years aging. The dense tannins are powerful, while the plum jam fruits are superripe, yet certainly keeping in balance. A great, ripe wine.
