Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Made from grapes that used to go into Barca Velha, Portugal’s most-storied table red, this wine represents the New Wave of Douro wines. It’s inky and intense, with whiffs of smoke and toast from new oak barrels, but also incredible fruit concentration. Blackberries, coffee and dried spices on the palate; it finishes long and firm, with hints of licorice.

Meandro, named after the horseshoe bend on the Douro that surrounds the Vale Meão vineyard, is the second wine from this quinta. In its own right, it is a fine wine, solidly based around smooth, rich black berry fruits and spice. Age for 5–6 years at least.

Soft and juicy, showing the ripe heat of the Upper Douro. Sweet chocolate and fresh fruits balance well, supported easily by light tannins. It’s easy, likely to develop relatively quickly.

Shows a bit of tar or treebark on the nose, then reveals crisp, mulberry-flavored fruit on the palate before picking up hints of chocolate on the tart, tangy finish. Imported by W.J. Deutsch & Sons.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A bit crisper and lighter in weight than top vintages of this wine, but pleasing nevertheless, with cedar, herb and cherry flavors that merge harmoniously on the finish. Imported by W.J. Deutsch & Sons.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A selection of lots not deemed worthy of inclusion in this estate’s flagship red, Meandro is nevertheless a fine wine and an even better value. Smoke and herbs add complexity to the blueberries and blackberries found on the nose, while the flavors combine lush fruit with intense notes of spice and anise. Drink now–2008.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This lushly fruity Port folds in enough intriguing floral aromas to be more than a simple fruit bomb. Briary notes add another element to the creamy boysenberry flavors that are incredibly rich but not cloying or syrupy. Likely to mature early but hold well, thanks to masses of supple tannins. Great quality for the price.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows a lifted fruit character on the nose—maybe even a little hint of nail polish—but also some earth and berry scents. Bright raspberry flavors on the palate are backed by mineral notes, finishing crisp. Lacks the weight and structure of the best vintage Ports. Imported by W.J. Deutsch & Sons.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This great quinta is owned by the Ferreira family and was the former home of the legendary table wine, Barca Velha. This 2001 is a great example of the power of the wines from this sun-baked vineyard. Young black fruits are balanced with perfumes and tarry flavors. It’s dark, intense and likely to be long lasting.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The second wine from the famous Vale Meão quinta, Meandro’s name is a play on the bends of the river Douro, which surrounds the property. It’s a finely perfumed wine, layered with dark tannins, with licorice and black plum flavors, topped by some smoky wood.
