Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A powerhouse of a wine that goes from densely rich to massive without a pause. The ripe fruit, the dark, heavy tannins, the black plum and fig flavors, all come from the terroir of this great vineyard.

From a parcel of old vines around the quinta chapel, this is a stunning wine. It has all the opulence we expect from Vesuvio, along with a density that is rare in this vintage. The tannins are there, but are equalled by the toffee, ripe fruit, figs, sweet chocolate. The whole wine is lightened by acidity, but will obviously age.

The Symingtons’ showpiece vineyard in the upper Douro continues to make great vintage Port. This 2003 shows the estate’s potential for big, luscious wines that are both powerful and tannic. It is opulent and generous, with the potential for good aging. Imported by Premium Port Wines Inc.

This wine has the dark fruit typical of this quinta, but this year shows more elegance than usual, with dusty tannins and concentrated, sweet fruit.

Quinta do Vesuvio is owned by the Symington family but managed separately from the family’s shipping brands (Dow, Graham, Warre). Vesuvio’s immense terraces and vast open lagares for fermentation, have produced a suitably dense, dark, brooding 2000, perfumed with violets and bursting with solid tannins. This is a great vintage wine.-

With its delicious juicy character, and blackberry jelly sweetness, this is a ripe wine, packed with fruit. It is sustained by a core of tannins and some herbal bitterness offering a good contrast to all the opulence and richness.

A Pombal is a dovecote (it’s also the name of the Portuguese prime minister who created the Douro demarcation in 1756), and this wine comes from vines close to a dovecote on the Vesúvio estate. It shows smooth, opulent richness with the concentration of low yields. It has wonderful black fruits and a sweet, spicy tannin character.

As ever, Vesuvio is packed with its generous, opulent ripe fruit, showing richness, dense flavors, layers of jam and sweetness with a hint of caramel flavors. This is a Port for indulgence, ripe, rich and packed with flavor.

Structured wine, shouting of its dark schist terroir. Bitter chocolate and spicy fruit set an attractive frame for the acidity. With plenty of weight to go with the tannins, this will age well.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A brooding nose of sullen blackberries and earth presages a wine that shows wonderful balance between fruit, alcohol, acidity and tannin. It’s not a huge, extracted Port, but one that carries itself with grace, finishing with good length and soft tannins. Drink 2010–2030.
