Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A 50-50 Viognier-Roussanne blend, the first white wine release from this new Walla Walla producer is another fine effort, loaded with floral and mint aromas, soft and penetrating in the mouth, with a lengthy finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rarely has a first effort from a new winery made such a strong impression as this Côtes-du-Rhône-ish effort from Rôtie Cellars. It’s classy stuff, silky, smooth, layered and beautifully integrated throughout, with a full, fleshy middle and seamless entry into finishing tannins that are polished and ripe.

This Columbia Valley Syrah (with 3% Viognier cofermented) is streaked throughout with a mix of tart berry, wild herb, green olive and coffee bean. It’s a fine-tuned effort with the sort of seamless complexity that few wineries—much less new wineries—ever achieve. Unfined and unfiltered.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Spicy Syrah, with a clear herbal core, shows blackberry and blueberry fruit, along with lighter suggestions of compost, pepper and anise. Unfined and unfiltered, the wine remains proportionate and avoids over-the-top ripeness or heft. Best if cellared for another 5–8 years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The percentage of Grenache has been bumped up in Rôtie’s second vintage, now at 70%, with the rest an even split between Syrah and Mourvèdre. Soft and spicy scents are laced with a mix of rock and vanilla. This nicely structured yet approachable wine might be mistaken for a Washington take on Priorat. The underlying minerality gives the light, plummy fruit a solid footing, and extends the length considerably.
