Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This shows classic dill, vanilla and brambly fruit aromas. Meanwhile, the palate deals wave after wave of vanilla-infused red fruit. For classicists this will constitute a trip down memory lane; a testament to the greatness of 2001.

Having never tried this producer’s wines, we can only heap praise on this medium-bodied, more modern style of Rioja. Bacon, rubber and raspberry work the bouquet, while the palate is ripe and full as it pumps forth with pure red-fruit flavors. Firm and mildly tannic, with ample new oak leaving lasting flavors of vanilla, coffee and pepper. Hold for another year or so, if possible; 900 cases produced.

Smooth and comfortable bouquet, with aromas of raisin, blackberry and marzipan. Falls into the lush, ripe category, with blackberry, plum and mild herbal flavors. Finishes easy, deep and chewy, with chocolate and smoked meat accents. Honest and ready to drink now.

Same score and overall quality as the year before, which is something to celebrate. The nose features rosy red fruit aromas and touches of classic dill and vanilla. Clear, pure and driving in the mouth, with fine tannins and acidity. Finishes with mocha and coffee. Covers the angles. Drink now through 2015.

Rubbery, smoky and a little crusty smelling, with creamy, mildly lactic berry flavors and feel. The wine has an oaky stickiness to it that is most present late. While neither heavy nor stewed, this wine does have a soft, chunky DNA. So while it’s big and plump, it’s also only half-full.

On the peppery side, with a peanutty aromatic character, yet when it all airs out it finds a pretty good resting place. The palate is slick feeling, if a touch closed, while the flavor profile consists of roasted red fruit and peanuts. Baked on the finish, with pepper and vanilla.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fits the mold of traditional Rioja Crianza. The nose has oaky warmth and a slight mulchy quality that probably comes from the hot vintage. But it’s holding in there with ripe black cherry and berry flavors that are accented by chocolate, vanilla and cola. Has grabby tannins and is ready to go now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Round and ripe, as you might expect for a late-arriving 2003. The nose features blackberry and spiced tea, while the palate deals meaty black cherry accented by tobacco. It doesn’t have the best structure or build, and it probably comes in a little heavy. So for best results drink now.

Nice on the nose, with mildly herbal red-fruit, leather, tobacco and tomato-leaf aromas. The palate is full in size, with both creaminess and clamping tannins. The palate delivers earthy raspberry and plum flavors, while vanilla and pepper share the finish. Very nice and still capable of withstanding more cellar time. Drink now through 2013.
