Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Familiar aromas of black fruit, licorice and earth get it going, followed by saturated body weight that reaches all corners of the mouth while displaying earthy, chunky blackberry and black cherry flavors. Flush, comfortable and slightly heavy. Drink now through 2012.

Roll out the barrels! This is one heavily charred, very toasty number. At first the oak seems forced, and always is it front and center. But with some time in the cellar, today’s dark, resiny bitterness should subside. At least we hope it does, because the wine has structure, density and pretty good fruit. Definitely for folks not opposed to barrel influence.

Good for a mature wine but it does smell a bit flat and damp. That murkiness blows off somewhat, leaving a solid, aged Rioja wine with acidic zap and lightly baked berry, cherry, tomato and spice flavors. Mild on the finish. Drink now.

A rock-solid wine that features a nose of natural leather, bacon and pure plum and berry. It’s friendly and a little plump on the palate, but well structured. The flavors of plum and black berries are mixed with a touch of oak, and thus the finish has a light creaminess that blends with chocolate and pepper flake. Nice crianza for everyday drinking.

Call it rustic, barnyardy or pickled, but no matter how you slice it, it comes out rather green. At first the fruit seems too dilute to matter, but with airing it develops some personality. A good mouthfeel is the high point, while too much in the way of pickle and cabbage notes is the main detractor.

A wine with faults and a few positives. On the nose, it’s roasted almost to the point of being overdone. It smells like baked fruit, roasted peanuts and tire tread. Doesn’t sound great, does it? But in the mouth its more true and recognizable; flavors of tomato leaf, dried red fruit, vanilla and dill are known entities, while the finish is long and draped with even more dill weed. Drink now. This is not one to save.

With aromas of moss, balsam wood, baked berry and earth, this is a complex, interesting Rioja that’s overdelivering for $20. The palate is lush, soft and easy, but also pure and flavorful as the fruit runs deep and meaty. Finishing notes of licorice, dark spice and lasting berry fruit will make you happy you went here. Drink now through 2013.

Coconut and vanilla aromas are squarely in the lead, but the nose’s berry base is more than solid. Plump, round and showing good overall balance, with flavors of cola, dark fruit and coconut. A ripe, bulky crianza with plenty of leftover oak on the finish.

Berry, pine and leather aromas, with a full mouth of cherry, spice, tar, and leather make for lots of sensory fulfillment. Full, but not sharp, tannins and very good balance complete the package. Drinks well now and will improve for another 2 to 5 years.

Firm, earthy and rubbery aromas lead to a tight, focused palate with robust black cherry in the lead and black tea and coffee notes along the side. Toasty, dark and a touch bitter on the finish, and overall it’s a solid crianza with condensed flavors and a basic mouthfeel.
