This has richness and intensity of flavor. The sweet dried plums and prunes are steeped in caramel and just an edge of burnt acidity from wood. The finish is delicious and smooth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This single-quinta tawny comes from Ramos-Pinto’s vineyard in the Torto valley in the heart of Port country. It shows the warmth and richness from the super-rich fruit, balanced with wood aging and lively acidity, at the perfect moment to be enjoyed. The finish is fresh, the dry wood lifted by fruitiness.

A fresh, lively, citrus-flavored wine with touches of white peaches and a soft structure. Give this 6 months in bottle for the freshness to peak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This powerful wine relies on flavors that go right to the core of impressive tannins and ripe black plums. The structure is dense, the fruit dry but still laced with spice and sweetness. A wine that needs many years of aging.

Ramos-Pinto Portuguese Red - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tightly coiled, the firm tannins hold down the exuberant berry fruits and fresh acidity. It is certainly young, but the elegance is already here, as well as the herb and spice seasoning from wood. The dry aftertaste reinforces the need for aging, at least 4–5 years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Grapey and full up front, with a palate of candied red and black fruits and loads of smooth dark chocolate. Sure, it’s a little overt and it wouldn’t hurt from a booster shot of complexity, but it’s neither thick nor cloying, and it is almost certain to go down easily.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Port from Ervamoira comes in a number of guises – both as an aged tawny and, now, as this single quinta vintage. This shows the super-ripe, concentrated nature of fruit from this quinta, giving a black fig, sweet character that also has a backbone of dark tannin.

Ramos-Pinto Port - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The darkest, most impressive version of the Duas Quintas brand, this Reserva is made in the open lagars, from foot-trodden grapes in the tradition still used by major Port houses. It gives a ripe, sweet, almost Port-like character, but still firmed by structure and dusty tannins to go with the superripe plums.

Zingy, touched with honey and ripe, soft fruits. Flavors of green plum, thyme and lime gives this lift and a light, white aftertaste.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Almeida refers to this vintage as playing Mozart compared to the 1994’s Beethoven and 2000’s Bach. At 20 years of age, it seems pretty much mature, with hints of coffee and maple syrup adding complexity to plum and cherry fruit. Drink now–2015.
